Climate

Tropical, here sun and warmth prevail.   Temperatures range from an average of 26 degrees in the Cool -dry (our equivalent of  winter) to an average of 31 degrees in the Hot-wet (equivalent to summer).  The rainforest canopy, and the coastal water modifiy extremes in temperature.   Winter is our best swimming weather.

Average rain for the year is 3900mm, while Thornton's Peak may receive up to 10 metres.  70% of the rain falls during the Hot-wet sometimes called the Wet Season, from December to April.  During the rest of the year the steep mountain ranges trap moisture from the ocean and ensure there is frequent rainfall on the coast.  Rain clouds gather around Thornton's Peak during the day and at night we get cool showers and catabatic breezes which are our natural air-conditioning.

December to April is also the cyclone season in Northern Australia.  Alerts are broadcast and precautions are advised.  All buildings meet cyclone specifications, cyclones are part of our life.
